The loveliest destination for outings in the fall
Part 4: Starnberger See and Ammersee Region

Experience a golden autumn in good weather: Especially in the fall, the lakes of Bavaria provide a fantastic backdrop; they remain one of the most popular destinations for the people of Munich to go on outings, even in the fall. A variety of activities such as hiking, sailing, windsurfing and just taking a relaxed walk through the nature preserve give the body and spirit a regenerative break. Here is a short list of the loveliest places just outside the gates of Munich:

Starnberger See

Only about 25 kilometers southwest of Munich you'll find Starnberger See, which people nickname the "Bathtub of Munich" because of its proximity to Bavaria's capital. The lake shore features numerous old villas and palaces with many majestic trees. This makes the region a perfect place for an outing in the fall, too.
A path of just over 50 kilometers runs apart from the main roads and around the lake. It makes a great day's tour for cyclists.
Highlight: Atop the 728-meter Ilkahöhe near Tutzing you have the prettiest vantage point for admiring the Starnberger See. The fantastic view over the lake provides a panorama of the Chiemgau Alps all the way to the Zugspitze.

Ammersee

Around 40 kilometers southwest of Munich you'll find Bavaria's third largest lake. Its narrow form stretches across an area of nearly 50 square kilometers. There's a long tradition of fishing on Ammersee. Many restaurants around the lake shore, some of them well known, offer guests freshly caught fish specialties. The “Renke” is the "top dog" of gastronomy here and you can enjoy it especially well on the lakeside patio.
Highlight: Go on a hike from Herrsching up to the Andechs Monastery. The path can get a little steep and challenging, but rewards you with a sensational panorama view across Ammersee.
