The Munich metropolitan region as a great place to live: Allach-Untermenzing

The metropolis of Munich has a lot to offer, but there's also plenty to discover and experience in the neighborhoods around Munich's city center. This month we present to you some of the recreational highlights in the popular neighborhood of Allach-Untermenzing:

Experience Nature

The neighborhood of Allach-Untermenzing on the northwestern side of Munich features a real paradise for those who love to hike and cycle in nature: a wooded region called the Allacher Lohe or Allacher Forst. The Allacher Lohe, a vestige of the sparse tanbark woods that once covered the entire Munich gravel plain, is situated between the switchyard and the beltway. Because of the rich variety of animal and plant species living in the Allacher Lohe and the adjacent heathlands, it has been made a nature reserve.

Highlight: The woods are crisscrossed with wide, graveled paths suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

Take the Plunge

The Dive Center Paradise offers diving courses year round for beginners and advanced learners of every age, as well as instructor training courses for anyone wanting to become diving teachers themselves. Divers can rent scuba tanks or fill their own tanks seven days a week at the "Tauchbasis", which also sells surplus stock and used equipment at low prices. The associated dive workshop will repair and overhaul diving equipment. In addition, the diving school organizes diving trips to more than 50 destinations around the world.

Highlight: At the dive shop you'll find a huge selection of diving equipment and accessories.

Bavarian Treats

The Würmtalhof restaurant has been preparing culinary "schmankerln", the Bavarian word for treats, for more than 85 years. This traditional inn is situated in the heart of Allach near the Würm river. It serves up a diverse menu of dishes, including some vegetarian ones, in a cozy atmosphere. In addition to a large selection of wines and other refreshments, you can order "hand-brewed" beer from the Maisach Brewery. Würmtalhof offers inexpensive lunches and special dishes from Tuesdays to Fridays.

Highlight: When the sun is out, enjoy a schmankerl or two in the little beer garden along the Würm river.

Historical Allach

There's a lot to discover in Allach. For example, the Gothic and Neo-Romanesque Castle Allach was built in 1900. It is situated in the center of a park on the banks of the Würm Canal. It can only be viewed from outside, since it now belongs to the company MAN. The St. Peter and Paul Church in the center of the district is also especially attractive. Parts of the building date back to the year 800. Not far from the church you'll find the Allacher Mariensäule (a column topped with a gilded statue of Mary). The most colorful building in Allach is located on Oertelplatz. Master painter Franz Rebl created a colorful work of art as his company headquarters (together with the artist Carsten Kruse).

Highlight: Take a trip along the "KulturGeschichtsPfad" (a walk focused on culture and history which you'll find at muenchen.de) and discover Allach from an entirely new side.

Freshen Up

Not far from the outer border of Allach-Untermenzing begins the 120-hectare "Langwieder Seenplatte" local recreational area. This lake district encompasses three lakes, Langwieder See, Lußsee and Birkensee, and offers a veritable bathing paradise in summer. Langwieder See is the second-largest lake in and around Munich. In addition to bathing, you can rent rowboats and play minigolf at the lake. With its gently sloping pebble beach, Lußsee is especially child-friendly and perfectly suited to those first attempts at swimming. Signage at the sunbathing lawns around smaller Birkensee indicate which parts are for nude sunbathing.

Highlight: The water quality in all three lakes is exceptional.

Allach can be reached quickly and easily from Munich's city center. With the S2 commuter train, you can get from Munich's central train station to the Allach commuter train station in only 16 minutes. We wish you plenty of enjoyment as you discover this multifaceted neighborhood.
