There are several quickly accessible excursion destinations in the region to the west of Munich. With a wide range of leisure activities in the areas of sport, culture, recreation, nature and more, this region invites you to exciting tours of discovery. In this article, we would like to show you some interesting leisure highlights west of Munich.

Fitness activities

If you like sports, the Squash Pit in Germering is well worth a visit. In addition to the nine squash courts found here, there is also a sauna, a bar and a sunny beer garden, which is the perfect place to relax after a hard day’s exercise. The Alpaka Beach leaves nothing to be desired. Beach volleyball, beach soccer and tennis are far from everything this place has to offer: visitors can also look at the alpaca beach lamas as well as enjoy a range of snacks and drinks. The golf course on the Angerhof Estate is just a 45 minute’s drive westward from Munich. Idyllically situated with a view of the Alps, new trend sports such as “soccer golf” can be tried out here. The café “Angerhüttn” offers coffee and cakes as well as a variety of snacks to round off a day of golf.

Highlights: After an active day, visitors can use the Alpaka Beach barbecue pits for a cozy evening cookout.

Family fun

The region to the west of Munich offers more than enough entertaining leisure activities for the whole family: Therme Bad Wörishofen invites you to a relaxing day in spa paradise with vitality baths, saunas, blueFUN sports baths, and the THERMEN-Galeria shopping mall. The Skyline Park, Bavaria's largest theme park, has more than 60 attractions. A whitewater course, giant slide, swingboat, the Sky Jump, the Zero Gravity and bumper cars offer loads of fun for all ages. A leisurely shopping spree at the Pasing Arcaden in western Munich, paired with a break at one of the 28 restaurants, is sure to be a relaxed experience as a family or with friends. With 120 shops, visitors will be able to fill all of their fashion, leisure, electronics, health and decoration needs and more. There is even a children’s cinema, play castle and playground to keep the kids entertained.

Highlights: The sports and family pool at Therme Bad Wörishofen is equipped with several water slides, a speed slide and a play and learning pool. When they’re not in the pool, children can keep busy with the playhouse, jungle gym, giant games and foosball table.

Discover nature

The beautiful lakes and green areas to the west of Munich are particularly plentiful and are perfect for excursions. The nearby bathing lakes, the Ammersee, Starnberger See, Pilsensee, Weßlinger See and the Wörthsee are ideal for enjoying a sunny day in nature to the fullest. The Herrschinger Moos, Ampermoos and the Vogelfreistätte Ammersee-Südufer are good for quiet walks. The Grafrath experimental forest garden provides information about the forests of Europe, America and Asia. Its interesting paths allow visitors to explore the wonderful variety of plants. The München-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden offers around 19,600 different plant species on an area of around 21 hectares. The garden can be particularly enjoyed in spring, when its abundance of plants is blossoming.

Highlights: Those who have visited the botanical garden should also pay a visit to Nymphenburg Castle, which is only a few minutes away. The castle and grounds offer many interesting sights. Concerts are also held in its halls. Be sure to take a gondola ride along the Middle Canal when the weather is nice.

Experience history

West of Munich there are some historical sights and museums to discover. The Künstlerhaus Gasteiger is a museum with an impressive Art Nouveau display, historical photographs, a selection of works by the sculptor Mathias Gasteiger and a collection of paintings by the painter Anna Sophie Gasteiger. The museum also features an artists’ garden. The Andechs Monastery is also worth a visit. In addition to the pilgrimage church, there are also guided tours of the monastery brewery and distillery available. In July, visitors to the annual Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament are transported back to the Middle Ages. There are various shows as well as music, jugglery and craft offerings to enjoy. And don’t miss out on the selection of markets and culinary delights.

Highlights: At the Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament, numerous knights compete against each other in a gripping staged show.

The Wörthsee and the Weßlinger See lakes can be reached from Neuaubing, where we are currently developing our project “GLEISHARFE süd”, in about 20 minutes by car. It takes about one hour by car to reach Therme Bad Wörishofen and the Skyline Park, and the Andechs Monastery can be reached in about 35 minutes.

We hope you enjoy exploring the varied west of Munich.
