Top free time activities away from the center – East of Munich

The region to the east of Munich offers a number of easy to reach excursion destinations with a range of free time activities such as fitness, culture, recreation and nature. We would like to tell you about a few highlights in this article.

 

Fitness activities


Fitness fans will enjoy the climbing gym and gardens as well as the amusement park in Neufinsing, located to the east of Munich. The "High-east Kletterhalle" climbing gym boasts a 1,400 m2 indoor facility with 700 m2 of outdoor climbing space for various skill levels. Those looking to relax will be able to do so in the Finnish sauna and relaxation rooms with heated loungers. The GoKartArena & Familienpark Neufinsing features a number of demanding racetracks for beginners and pros alike, as well as several bowling lanes and an outdoor mini golf course that will guarantee fun and excitement.

Highlight: The "High-east" climbing gym offers an extensive range of courses, including: trial lessons; top-roping; lead climbing; all-inclusive coaching for kids and adults; bouldering workshops; and training for parents and their kids.

 

Fairy tale fun


Those who like visiting amusement parks will have the pick of the litter in the region east of Munich. One option is the Freizeitpark Ruhpolding leisure park which offers visitors over 60 different attractions. Some of the highlights are the fairy tale and adventure land, a range of games for the whole family, the mountain roller coaster and the new tube water slides. Then there’s the Märchen-Erlebnispark Marquartstein theme park, where kids will enjoy attractions like the summer toboggan run and railway, the water garden and the wheelbarrow game. Bayern-Park, in Reisbach, offers a family adventure land, an animal trail, a range of exciting shows and much more for visitors of all ages.

Highlight: This year, you will be able to experience four new attractions at Bayern-Park. Among them is the “Stadlgaudi 4D”, an interactive themed ride in 4D that is the first of its kind.

 

Animal watching


There are also many wildlife parks and zoos to the east of Munich. The Poing wildlife park can be reached quickly and easily via the A94 (towards Passau when coming from Munich) and is open all year round. Here, you can take part in a bird of prey demonstration and learn all about the different types of birds. The BergTierPark Blindham wildlife conservation is located around 40 minutes to the southeast of Munich. After visiting the petting zoo, kids can explore the 2,000 m2 “SpielStadl” indoor playground while parents enjoy the relaxation room with a view of the Alps. The Oberreith wildlife park and forest rope course offers a variety of attractions. From the forest rope course and bungee trampoline to the observatory, horseback rides and petting zoo, there’s something for everyone.

Highlight: The Mangfall Lamas, in Valley, offers visitors the unique experience of going on long hikes with the animals.

 

Discover nature


There is plenty to be discovered to the east of Munich – especially for fans of nature. Its many forests, lakes and nearby mountains are perfect for day trips. With their numerous summits, vantage points, and cozy cabins, the Chiemgau Alps offer perfect conditions for hikers and climbers. Experienced hikers will enjoy the Ellmauer Halt, the highest peak of the Kaiser Mountains. The Ebersberger Forest spans an area of 90 km2 and can be reached from Munich in just 40 minutes. There is plenty of space here for peaceful walks and experiencing the wildlife.

Highlight: When at Lake Chiemsee, a boat trip from Prien or Gstadt to the Fraueninsel or Herreninsel islands comes highly recommended. Here you will be able to enjoy the magnificent landscapes of Lake Chiemsee on a nice island hike.

 

Experience history


There are several popular palaces and castles to the east of Munich that are well worth a visit. Built around the 11th century, Elkofen Castle is the only castle in the district of Ebersberg to remain intact and inhabited. Here visitors can independently explore the castle, the keep and the chapel. One of the longest castles in the world can be found in Burghausen. Burghausen Castle offers guided tours with various themes for kids, adults and groups. The Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee is just an hour’s drive away followed by a ferry ride. Built under King Ludwig II, the palace is based on that in Versailles. The castle grounds, water features, museum and the two galleries in the Augustinian monastery are also well worth a visit.

Highlight: A garden festival with music, talks and workshops will be held at Burghausen Castle from April 13–15, 2018. There will also be a special program for kids.

 

The Märchen-Erlebnispark Marquartstein theme park as well as the Lake Chiemsee town of Prien is about an hour’s drive from the community of Vaterstetten, where INDUWO is currently realizing the “FreiRaum Vaterstetten” project. From Vaterstetten, it takes about 30 minutes by car to reach Elkofen Castle, the Poing wildlife park, GoKartArena & Familienpark Neufinsing and Mangfall Lamas Valley.
