The metropolis of Munich has a lot to offer, but there's also plenty to discover and experience in the neighborhoods and communities around Munich's city center. As part of our "Munich as a Great Place to Live" series, we show you different things to do in your time off, whether they involve nature, culture, sports, or entertainment. This month we are presenting part 2 of the leisure highlights for the popular Munich district of Allach-Untermenzing.

During the week, Trattoria Olive at the Oertlplatz square, offers daily lunch specials as well as a wide selection of Italian dishes at good prices. A special insider tip is the cute Café Zimt und Zucker near the Allach train station. Here you can delight in some homemade cake and a filling breakfast in a cozy atmosphere. The popular Zur Allacher Mühle restaurant is the place to be in Allach for typical Bavarian service and traditional dishes and delicacies. Guests here can also enjoy exquisite Mediterranean and international cuisine.

Highlight: Schlossschänke, near Blutenburg Castle, offers lunch specials and an extensive choice of meals in a traditional atmosphere on a terrace overlooking the sea.

Cultural

Blutenburg Castle, the former residence of the Bavarian dukes and electors, is located in a romantic setting in the neighboring district of Obermenzing. Blutenburg was built by Duke Albrecht III in 1430 and has served as the residence for the likes of Agnes Bernauer, famous daughter of a tailor from Augsburg. Today the castle is the home of the International Youth Library. Tours can be booked on site. Children can play the Tatort Blutenburg detective game to explore the castle in a fun and exciting way. The tour shows kids what life was like in and around the castle in the 15th century.

Highlight: A range of events such as the wine festival and various opera performances are held in the castle's courtyard in the summer.

Refreshing

With a number of stunning lakes in the vicinity, Allach is the perfect place for fans of nature and swimming. To the west of Allach is the Langwieder lake district, to which Langwieder See, Birkensee and Lußsee belong. To the north, in adjacent Karlsfeld, is the Karlsfelder See recreational area. To the east of the Allacher Lohe nature preserve, swimming enthusiasts will enjoy the Feldmochinger See, Fasaneriesee and Lerchenauer See lakes.

Highlight: From May through September, a bus departs from the Lochhausen commuter train station for the Langwieder lake district every 20 minutes.

Sporty

Those looking to stay active will find plenty of ways to do so in Allach. The TSV Allach 09 sports club offers gymnastics, football, volleyball and handball. Football fans will appreciate the SV Allach 1949 sport club's many junior and senior teams. Beginners and pros alike will get their money's worth at Tennis Center Allach. Here, tennis players who are eager to learn are taught in a fun way. The Seeteufel diving club allows diving enthusiasts to immerse themselves in adventure. Training sessions take place every Monday at the Forstenrieder pool as well as the lakes in and around Munich, and covers everything from basic diving certification to the German diving badge.

The variety of beautiful flowers and various tree species draw many nature lovers to the area. The Angerlohe nature preserve, south of the Allacher Lohe, is home to a range of endemic songbirds as well as the kestrel and brown owl. It is also an important recreational area in Allach.
