Munich's Christmas Market – the 2016 highlights

The white winter has finally arrived and parents are again asking themselves what they can do with their little ones during this chilly season. There are plenty of winter activities for children in and around Munich. We’ve collected a few highlights for you:

Münchner Marionettentheater (puppet theater)

Hearing stories – these wood-and-fabric performers have been enchanting children and adults alike with comical and emotional stories for more than 100 years. Fairy tales, operas and contemporary plays are presented with traditional marionettes as well as stick puppets and hand puppets. The theater is currently showing the children’s opera “Die Zauberflöte” (The Magic Flute) and the puppet show “Die kleine Hexe” (The Little Witch).

Highlight: The shows take place four to five times every week.

Sea Life

Immerse yourself in undersea worlds - Sea Life is a pleasant year round destination for an outing. Here you can admire around 4,000 marine creatures in more than 33 pools and aquariums that simulate natural environments.

Highlight: There’s a “petting pool” where you can experience and explore starfish, anemones and shrimp up close.

Museum for children and young people (Kinder- und Jugendmuseum)

Learning and exploring – The Kinder- und Jugendmuseum offers an ever-changing program of exhibits, workshops, games and fun for young people aged four and over. The focus here is on games and discovery. Visitors can try, touch and climb everything on display. The current exhibit is called “Alles klar”, involving the topic of communication and the various ways of sharing information.

Highlight: There’s a ton of fun to be had from the colorful spectrum of activities, from flea markets and sporting events, to experimentation, arts and crafts and a creative workshop.

Wildpark Poing

Get out into nature – For a special winter experience, enjoy an outing to the Wildpark Poing. This wildlife park is only thirty minutes outside Munich, where you’ll see native animal species as you wander along four kilometers of path through fields and forest. The park features a lot of animals to discover, including various native species of game, breeding ewes, pygmy goats, pot-bellied pigs, wildcats, foxes, wolves and lynxes. It’s a real treat and is sure to leave the whole family with pleasant memories.

Highlight: Children have plenty of room to play around in the giant adventure playground. The petting zoo lets kids come especially close to the animals.

Guided city walks for children by Stadtreisen München

Learn the city’s history – Explore and rediscover the city of Munich on these city walks designed especially for children aged 5 to 12. This tour takes little explorers on a search for clues, where they’ll solve puzzles, forage through hidden niches in the historical center and take trips into the city’s past.

Highlight: The tours can also be booked as part of a holiday program or for a child’s birthday party.

Winter games afternoons

Fun and games – Between November and April, Munich’s Sportamt hosts an afternoon of children’s games every Sunday in the Ostpark, Westpark and Luitpoldpark. Children 3 and older are invited to play freely with a variety of gaming and sports equipment. Not even snow keeps the kids from building, creating and playing sports.

Highlight: Children can participate free of charge with or without their parents under the supervision of game coordinators.

Starry skies for children in Munich

Explore the stars – Admire the night sky every Friday at 5:00 pm at the Bavarian Public Observatory, Munich. This two-hour guided tour for children includes a walk through the observatory and the planetarium. When skies are clear, you can see more than stars; you’ll observe the sun, the moon and Venus through the telescope.

Highlight: A age-appropriate program with lots of objects to look at teaches children about the starry sky.

We wish young and old alike a lot of fun discovering the many wonderful recreational activities offered in and around beautiful Munich.
