The outskirts of Munich with the nearby Alps offer wonderful opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and other types of Alpine sports in summer. Whether they are your point of departure, destination or just somewhere to take a break, the beautiful cabin restaurants offer breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and are always worth a stop. In the following three-part series, we present the loveliest excursion destinations according to region:

Part 1: Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Mountain Idyll South of Munich

The region around Garmisch-Partenkirchen invites visitors to take extended hiking tours or climb up the Wetterstein, the Ammer or the Ester mountains. There are also many hiking paths and routes suitable for beginners or the whole family. Some of the summits of the most popular destinations, such as the Zugspitze or the Kreuzeck, can be reached by cableway. The Wetterstein has various inns for spending the night or taking a break, including the Münchner Haus, the highest inn in Germany. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is about 90 kilometers away from Munich. The region is easily reached by car on the A95 or by train directly from Munich's central station (Regio Oberbayern, Garmischer summer ticket), making it perfect for a day trip.
