The loveliest beer gardens in Munich

Munich is home to many a cozy beer garden. These are the perfect places to enjoy a cold beer and tasty snack with your friends and escape the heat of the blazing sun in the shade of chestnut trees. In this article, we would like to tell you about a few of the finest beer gardens Munich has to offer.

Southern Munich

Some of the most popular beer gardens are located on the south side of Munich. “Zum Flaucher”, in Thalkirchen, is one of them. Situated along the southern Isar meadows, this beer garden can be reached on foot or by bike and has a capacity of 1,300 guests who can enjoy Löwenbräu and Franziskaner beer and traditional Bavarian fish served on skewers as well as a number of vegetarian dishes, homemade cake and other typical beer garden snacks. It also features a stage, where musicians from in and around Munich entertain audiences with varied music from a range of genres.

“Waldwirtschaft Großhesselohe” is a cozy beer garden with all of the traditional features. A fantastic place to relax in the shade of the chestnut trees with a Spaten beer and hearty pretzel to the accompaniment of cool jazz music.

Gasthof “Hinterbrühl” is just as popular. Here, around 1,000 guests can enjoy Bavarian snacks and warm meals and take in the sights of the rafts passing along the Isar, while enjoying a Hacker-Pschorr or Paulaner beer.

Gutshof Menterschwaige is home to a beer garden with space for around 2,500 guests. In addition to the hearty meals and Bavarian snacks, they also serve fish on skewers as well as crêpes and seasonal cakes.

Northern Munich

The beer garden at the Chinese Tower is the second-largest in Munich. Up to 7,000 visitors can enjoy typical beer garden snacks, vegetarian dishes, desserts and, of course, great beer.

“Aumeister” is located at the northern edge of the English Garden. It often hosts various concerts and dancing events. The beer garden’s guests can enjoy a cold beer, a snack, crêpes and cake as well as freshly prepared meals in the English Garden. It’s the perfect way to wind down after work or round off the evening.

The beer garden at the Olympic Park offers a particularly stunning view of both Olympiaberg Hill and Olympiasee Lake. Hacker-Pschorr beer, wine, Prosecco, coffee, cake and hearty meals also entice you to while away a few pleasurable hours here.

Eastern Munich

There are also plenty of delightful beer gardens in Munich’s east. The Michaeligarten is worthy of particular mention. Guests can enjoy nature right on the lake over a delicious beer garden meal.

The Franziskaner Beer Garden offers visitors plenty of shade, typical beer garden snacks, beer and a cozy atmosphere. It also hosts the annual Summer and Paper Lantern Festival with music.

Western Munich

There’s no shortage of great beer gardens in western Munich. Take Munich’s largest for example: the “Königlicher Hirschgarten”. Up to 8,000 guests can help themselves to warm and cold Bavarian delights, homemade cakes and fresh ice cream from the self-service area. You are also welcome to bring your own snacks. They serve Augustiner, König Ludwig and Tegernseer beer, and the large awning, umbrellas and chestnut trees provide plenty of protection against the sun and any light rain showers.

The Nachtbiergarten at Backstage is particularly noteworthy. In good weather, up to 300 guests can sit at the beer tables, in the lounge furniture or beach chairs. What makes this beer garden so unique is that guests are allowed to cook for themselves. Two stone grills are provided for guests to grill their own food. Sausages, baguettes, pretzels and “Obazda”, a traditional Bavarian cheese delicacy, are available for purchase at the bar. What better way to pass the time than with table football, board and card games and a beer or cocktail at the beer garden?

DEMOS is currently developing the new “GLEISHARFE süd” building project in Neuaubing, in western Munich. You can reach the “Königlicher Hirschgarten” via public transportation in around 20 minutes as well as the Nachtbiergarten in around 15 minutes. It takes around 30 minutes to get to these beer gardens by bike. By car, it takes about 20 minutes to reach “Zum Flaucher” and around 25 minutes to reach Gasthof “Hinterbrühl”.
