The metropolis of Munich has a lot to offer, but there's also plenty to discover and experience in the neighborhoods and communities around Munich's city center. As part of our "Munich as a great place to live" series, we show you different things to do in your time off, whether they be part of nature, culture, sports, or entertainment. This month we present you to a few leisure time highlights to be found in the district of Freiham.

Dining out

There are plenty of restaurants with a wide range of culinary offerings to choose from in and around Freiham. Bavaria Motel’s Platzhirsch Freiham offers both regional and international specialties in a modern yet traditionally Bavarian atmosphere. The beer garden at Aubinger Einkehr is the place to be when the weather is nice. Here you can delight in Bavarian meals and snacks as well as an alternating weekly menu. At the restaurant Apollon, in nearby Aubing, you can enjoy Greek specialties ranging from lamb chops and gyros to hake fillets. Shiv Restaurant, on Limesstraße, offers an inexpensive lunch menu with Indian cuisine. They serve a variety of both meat and vegetarian dishes.

Those who live in the west of Munich have plenty of shopping options available to them. The Pasing Arcaden is probably the most well-known and largest shopping mall in western Munich. It offers a large variety of different brands to choose from for fashion, jewelery, accessory, sports, pharmaceutical, multimedia, health and beauty products. In the newly established Freiham center, there is approximately 20,000 m² of additional floor space with many businesses being planned. Enjoy nature

One of the most popular recreational areas in western Munich is the Aubinger Lohe. The 1.8 km² forest area is an often frequented destination for nature enthusiasts and joggers. In the winter, the “Teufelsberg” is a popular sledding hill at the Aubinger Lohe. Furthermore, an approximately 58-hectare landscape park is currently being planned in Freiham. Among the landscape park’s features will be a “secret garden”, two educational and adventure trails, and many observation platforms. For kids, an adventure playground, two water parks and plenty of open spaces for games are planned. Those looking for a bit of relaxation will find it at the “Chillpark”. And it doesn’t take long to get to the stunning Alpine foothills surrounding Munich from Freiham. You can reach the idyllic lake of Wörthsee in just around 20 minutes via the A96, and it takes just around a half an hour to reach the Ammersee and Starnberger See lakes. Go for a drive around beautiful Wörthsee, drink a coffee at the beachside café directly on the shore of the Starnberger See, or go for a jaunt to Seehof Herrsching for lunch. In summer, you can enjoy the Seewinkel beach at Ammersee and the cozy beer gardens near the water for a real vacation feeling. And the best part of it all is that it’s practically in your backyard.

Highlights: To accompany the landscape park, an amphitheater, many urban gardening plots and a children’s farm are being planned.
