The Munich metropolitan region as a great place to live: Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied

The metropolis of Munich has a lot to offer, but there's also plenty to discover and experience in the neighborhoods around Munich's city center. As part of our "Munich as a great place to live" series, we show you different things to do in your time off, whether they be part of nature, culture, sports, or entertainment. This month we present recreational highlights to be found in the neighborhood of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied:

Climb up

The "Boulderwelt München West" indoor climbing park in Neuaubing offers climbs for children and adults. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing without the use of ropes or harnesses. Using hand and footholds, climbers ascend artificial walls with a safe-jumping height of about 3 to 4.5 meters. "Boulderwelt" offers climbs with various levels of difficulty, so everyone from beginners to climbing pros can find the right challenge. Experienced climbers can show their stuff on the competition wall. The courses are changed every week.

Highlights: The center offers a broad range of bouldering courses, yoga and functional training.

Riding

The "Reitstall am Langwieder Bach", between Aubing and Lochhausen, is an insider tip for all horse lovers and riding fans. Regular lessons for individuals and groups are offered for both beginners and experienced riders. The riding stable also offers a "Playtime with Ponies" class that entertainingly shows small children aged 3 to 6 how to behave around horses and teaches them age-appropriate exercises. Every Sunday morning there's a guided horseback ride through the Aubinger Lohe, to the Ratzenweiher, or to the Böhmerweiher.

Highlights: The stable offers "Children's Holiday Riding Camps" featuring rides and games during the school holidays.

Indoor playground

The WichtelWerk indoor playground in Aubing offers a host of games, toys, fun and active playing for children. The focus here is on amusement. There are tons of attractions to ensure family fun: ball pits, moonwalk, monkey bars, trampoline, wave chute, and lots more await little visitors. There's no need to worry if the little ones work up an appetite; tasty and healthy meals are available in the attached restaurant.

Highlights: You can book special "Wichtel Birthday Party" packages.

Relaxation

One of the most popular nearby recreational areas on the west side of Munich is the 6.2 km2 Aubinger Lohe. It spans from the Aubing district on the southeastern side to Lochhausen on the northern edge. Two brooks wind their way through the idyllic woods. The single rise in Aubinger Lohe, called the "Teufelsberg" or "Devil's Mountain", is steeped in myth and a favorite spot for joggers, walkers and cyclists. It's especially popular for sledding and tobogganing in wintertime. The Aubinger Lohe also features two ponds: little and big Böhmerweiher. Little Böhmerweiher is a nature reserve, but there are plans to develop the bigger pond for swimming.

Highlights: The paths are also suitable for buggies and there are beautiful spots for picnicking.

A Bite to eat

After a nice walk, the "Aubinger Einkehr" is a great place for a break. They have a broad selection of Bavarian specialties, a regularly changing weekly menu, and Augustiner beer fresh from the keg. The separate Wirtsstube and Jagdstube offer plenty of room for family celebrations, business meals or a spontaneous visit when in the area. When the weather is good, a spot in the beer garden under a chestnut tree with a liter of cool beer is a great way to relax. This is a place where you can still experience our traditional beer garden culture.

Highlights: When the weather starts to cool, the roofed and heated Salettl is still a good place to sit outdoors.

Skating

Here's a real insider tip for all skate fans: the Skatepark am Gleisdreieck in Aubing, which opened in August last year. The new routes, half and quarter pipes even attract skaters from other parts of the city to Munich's west side. The park is divided into two functionally different areas, including the snake run arena and the street section, which features numerous obstacles such as stairs, hand rails and ramps. The whole thing is suitable for various levels of ability and training courses.

Highlights: The new park offers around 700 square meters of space for skateboarding, BMX and inline skating enthusiasts.

Aubing can be reached quickly and easily from Munich's city center. The commuter train will take you from Munich's central train station to the "Neuaubing" commuter train station in only 16 minutes and the "Aubing" station in only 17 minutes. We wish you plenty of enjoyment as you discover this multifaceted neighborhood.
