Part 2 Berchtesgadener Land

The outskirts of Munich with the nearby Alps offer wonderful opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and other types of Alpine sports in summer. Whether it's your starting place, destination or just a place to take a break, the beautiful cabin restaurants offer breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and are always worth a stop. In the following three-part series, we present the loveliest excursion destinations according to region:

Part 2: Berchtesgadener Land – Mystical Mountains

Berchtesgaden, with its myth-enshrouded Watzmann massif, whose nine summits are reputedly made of the fossilized remains of the royal family, is easily reached by car in about one hour from Munich on the A8. The Berchtesgaden Alps are a popular destination for many hikers. There are gorgeous hiking paths for every level, from beginners to pro climbers seeking a challenging tour. A day trip to Königssee is also always worthwhile. The traditional inns and Alpine pastures are a wonderful place to take a break, have a snack, relax and recharge your batteries.

Kärlingerhaus – Altitude 1,630 meters, in Steinernen Meer, climb from St. Bartholomä
Kührointhütte – Altitude 1,420 meters, Watzmann massif, hike from Schönau
Kehlsteinhaus – Altitude 1,830 meters, historical excursion destination with impressive panoramic view
Reichenhaller Haus – Altitude 1,750 meters, hike from Padinger Alm in Bad Reichenhall
Watzmannhaus – Altitude 1,930 meters, Hocheck, Watzmann is the largest inn with 200 beds
